Four steps, start to finish
Five jobs share this name, from $0 to four figures. We tell you which one you have first.
Run the two-minute test first
Use another fixture and watch. One drain slow with the rest of the house normal is a trap or a branch.
Call and tell us what it did
Not 'my drain is blocked' — what the OTHER fixtures did.
The cheap answers first
If it is job one, we will tell you what to try before we come out: a plunger with the overflow blocked, or a hand snake past the trap.
Clear it, then say what caused it
A blockage cleared without a cause explained is a blockage you will pay for again.

See the jobThe two-minute test that decides which price applies
It costs nothing, it needs no tools, and it is the whole defense against a price revised on your doorstep.
Run another fixture and watch
Not the blocked one — a different one. A sink, a bath, the washing machine.
One slow, the rest normal: job one or…
A trap or a branch. $0 to $250, and a twenty-dollar hand snake past the trap quite often ends it.
Several at once, or backing up low: job…
A main line. $200 to $450, and every gallon used upstairs is making it worse, so stop using water.
Clears, then returns on a rhythm: job…
Roots. Snaking buys a season, jetting at $350 to $800 buys considerably longer, and neither closes the joint they came in through.
The first real rain is when job four stops being job one
Worth knowing, because the busiest week of the year is entirely predictable.
Roots grow through the warm months into any joint that has opened, and a lateral can run at half capacity for a long time without anybody noticing. Then the first sustained rain arrives, groundwater raises the load on the line, and a drain that had merely been slow stops altogether — across whole streets in the same week, particularly where the housing all went up together.
Which makes the cheap version of this a scheduled problem rather than an emergency. If a drain was slow last winter and slow again this spring, it is telling you what will happen in November. Dealing with it in standard hours in September costs a fraction of dealing with it at nine on a wet Sunday, and it is the same work.
